What is mycoplasma?
Mycoplasma genitalium (mycoplasma) is a small parasitic bacteria-like organism that lives in the cells of the genital tract.
How is it spread?
Mycoplasma genitalium spreads through sexual contact with an infected person.
It is estimated that about 1% of people are infected with this pathogen.
The presence of mycoplasma usually does not cause symptoms, but over time, due to the increase in the number of pathogens and/or a weakened immune system, it can lead to some problems.
Complications and diseases
Mycoplasma is a major cause of nonspecific urethritis in men, while in women it can cause vaginitis and cervicitis. If left untreated in women it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and cause premature birth.
Mycoplasma genitalium is difficult to grow in culture, so that the most reliable way of detection of this microorganism is by PCR, which is the method employed in our laboratory.
Testing is recommended for people with symptoms of sexually transmitted diseases as well as couples who have trouble conceiving.
DNA testing
in our laboratory testing is done exclusively by PCR.
The result of the test is obtained within one business day.
Samples for analysis
In women testing is done from a normal cervical or vaginal swab (no media) which should be left to dry in open air for about 5 minutes. The sample can be sent by mail, and is suitable for testing even after a few months.
In men, the test can be done from a sample of urethral swabs, sperm or the first morning urine.
These prices do not include taking swabs (cervical, vaginal, urethral) - these are taken only by doctors/ gynecologists at extra cost.
