From submitted material (e.g. underwear) it is possible to do a blood detection test. 
If blood is detected in the sample then it is possible to determine the DNA profile of the person from whom the blood originates. This forensic DNA profile can then be compared with the DNA profile of another person whose identity is known, from samples provided (cigarette butts, nails, plucked hair, glasses from which the person was drunk, and so on).
